The Brass for Beginners Natural Trumpet is the ideal introduction to brass playing for all ages. We are offering the complete outfit which includes the natural trumpet, a soft zip-up carrying case, a Mutec 3C mouthpiece, and an Owner’s Manual for its care and maintenance.
It is constructed from safe, strong, non-toxic polymer and is built to last, without moving parts that can become lost or damaged. It also includes a two-year limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship (details included in the Owner’s Manual). The instrument’s overall design is supported by significant research and development, ensuring it offers accurate intonation and sound quality.
The BfB natural instrument was designed for use both as a stand-alone learning instrument and in conjunction with the Brass for Beginners brass music programme which offers an innovative, engaging and informative introduction to brass music and instruments, whilst helping to establish the vital fundamentals of brass playing.
The BfB Natural Trumpet enables the student to learn the fundamentals of brass playing, distraction-free (no valves or slides), and significantly helps to develop their production skills by focusing on the instrument’s natural harmonics – the basis of all brass playing. A student book is also available to purchase separately which gives access to the Brass for Beginners music programme’s core resources.
There is also no movable tuning slide – the instrument is designed to help the player learn to produce the range of harmonics of the instrument and so the notes will fall naturally into place when they develop their ability. Where the centre of the note is not achieved (especially in the early days of learning), the tuning is adjusted by the player’s own intonation technique through listening and adjusting their embouchure accordingly. This is another great advantage of the BfB Natural Trumpet – it promotes a great listening discipline within a controlled harmonic range.
Whilst ideal for an introduction to brass playing either one-to-one or as part of a larger learning ensemble (see Discovering Brass below), the instrument’s tonal accuracy and quality of build also makes it a worthy candidate for more accomplished brass players wishing to explore the natural trumpet repertoire.
The Wallace Collection ran a Discovering Brass project in 2017-18 with three London primary schools. The project used the structure and resources of the BfB music programme which includes student and teacher books and online resources. The 90 children involved in the project developed their musicality and playing skills over 12 weekly delivery sessions, leading to a final concert in Duke’s Hall at The Royal Academy of Music. You can see a little about the project and how these instruments greatly assist large learning groups by viewing this summary video on YouTube:
The programme is versatile enough for one-to-one learning through to whole class delivery, the structured programme follows the time-travelling adventures of ‘Ragnar the caveman’ through colourfully illustrated chapters. Leading the student through the history of lip blown instruments the programme offers plenty of opportunities to expand knowledge and playing skills through suggested exercises, follow-up tasks, links to further online resources (including videos from a collection of renowned professional musicians) and access to the ‘Practice Cave’ which offers a wealth of additional resources to support the student’s progress.
The BfB Natural trumpet is a robust, accurately manufactured, and well equipped instrument outfit with carry bag and mouthpiece. The additional learning resources available to support the learning progression of the student are extremely engaging, expertly researched and offer a wealth of cross-curricular information. The ideal package for introducing any young potential player to the joys of brass music.
